Originally part of a fundraising initiative set up in the 50’s. The Wheel of Fortune at the Friary is as popular now as ever. Recognised by many local people as a significant date on the Christmas calendar, the wheel has generated significant funds for the Friary schools over the years. Friends of the Friary get busy throughout the Autumn sourcing prizes and each year hundreds of people go away from the Dominican Hall with much more than they expected. The wheel is now run by the Boys’ school under the supervision of Principal Kevin Stanley. It’s a night of old-style craic interspersed with carol singing, novelties and audience participation. Parents, Teachers and Children pool their resources to make this event much more than a fundraiser. Those who attend, enjoy a nights entertainment and more often than not win a prize. On the night, everything must go. Some of the prizes on offer this year include, an interactive Gaming chair, a Kodak tablet, Wireless Scanner, a variety of Vouchers , Furniture, Toys , Whiskey, Brandy, Wine, Slabs of Beer, Chocolates, Biscuits, Hampers, Garments, etc, etc…The old wheel is ageless and timeless having provided decades of simple entertainment for the people of our town. No gimmicks or gadgets.
Come along rest a while and Celebrate Christmas in Friary Style.
