This week our Green School Committee took a trip to the Fairy Pumping Station, just around the corner from our school to prepare for the planting of a pocket forest.  In preparing the ground, the committee gathered leaves from the path and wetted these with a tea-bag solution to create a liquid fertiliser. The green schools reps then covered the area with cardboard to ensure the leaves stayed damp and finally covered the cardboard with one tonne of wood chippings. A ‘Pocket Forest’ gets it’s name from the process that takes place on a forest floor, ensuring a nutrient rich environment for trees to grow. In February 2024, the green schools representatives will return to plant the pocket forest with trees so keep checking in to see the process in full.
